Paint Loss

An obvious sign of damage to a painting is flaking paint.  The paint layer has cracked and threatens to break away from the support.  Areas of the original paint are gone.

A conservator strives to salvage what remains.  Paint flakes are softened and adhered back to the support.  Cracks are adjoined and adhered in place.

The areas of paint loss are inpainted to match the hue and texture of the original paint.
