Overpaint

 

Sometimes the conservator confronts areas of loss that are ill-defined or obscured with either age or damage.  With the proper tools, equipment and talent along with a good deal of research, a conservator can make an educated guess as to what the original artist intended.  With the example to the right, the guesswork involved the shape of mulberry leaves as they curved around an arm.
