Cleaning

Cleaning, also termed "clearing", removes from the painting surface the  grime and/or aged varnish, uncovering the original colors and details of the work.

Paint Loss

The paint layer of a painting bonds to a layer of white ground which in turn binds to the canvas threads or panel surface.  The bonds weaken when the cracks appear.  Cracks begin when the painting is exposed to moisture and movement.

Tears

and holes, though very disfiguring, need not be beyond repair.

Reconstruction

Rarely is damage to a painting confined to a single element.  More often, damage encompasses the entire structure, triggering a process of reconstruction to the painting as a whole.

Examination

A thorough examination of the painting includes scientific testing of, and research into, the materials.  Only with such background information can a conservator begin to introduce proper restoration treatment.
